What a waste !

When someone fails to yield his life completely to God he makes himself a waste. A life without Christ is a waste. Your attainments and achievements in all spheres of life notwithstanding, if you reject your creator's rule and control you are a waste. Supposing you have all that life can offer and you get everything your heart desire like Solomon, if you don't have Jesus you are equally a waste. What a waste if all your hope, affection and pursuit ends only in this world when the bible says if only in this world we have hope we are of all men most miserable. You may be well-known even with a worldwide recognition, but if you are not known in the courts of heaven you are a waste. What a waste of divine resources you daily enjoy, you have received divine mercy, grace and goodness and after been greatly blessed by God, you now feel too big and decides to manage your life by yourself . You need to know that keeping God out of your affairs is an indication that you are preparing yourself to become a waste. Jesus further elaborated this in His parable about the rich fool (the rich self-sufficient but truly poor man) in Luke 12:13-21. The consequence of sins and rebellion is wastage and desolation (Isaiah 1:2&7, Romans 10:3b & 20-21). Oh, what a waste when divine resources are not appropriately and maximally utilized. The man with one talent hid it and he wouldn't trade with it to make profit (Luke 19:20-23). On the other hand, the prodigal son wasted his portion with riotous living and later he began to be in want. It is a waste to be prodigal with heaven's blessings (Luke 15:13-14). There are various activities and manifestations of waste, so, beware.

Idolatry is like a cancer that predisposes a life to a waste and there's an express command from God against it that's worth noting (Ephesians 5:11, Isaiah 8:19). Ahaz, one of the kings who ruled in Judah sold himself into all forms of idolatry (2 Chronicles 28:1, 6, 17-18 &21). There are several other accounts of idolatry in the bible with its attending consequences. For instance, in 2 Kings 17:9-18, 20, 33, 41, 2 Chronicles 25:14-16, 27-28, 2 Chronicles 21:12-15, Romans 1:25. What a waste! Ahaz bribed the king of Assyria, gave him the treasures of the Lord's house, yet, he did not help him. It was a pathetic situation (2 Chronicles 28:21). Note that in  verse 22-23 his practice of idolatry became his ruin and the ruin of the children of Judah. However, God has promised them protection and preservation (Zechariah 2:5). Nowadays, there are many idols we adore even as Christians that are taking the place of God and competing with our time. Hence, there is need for caution and carefulness so that we would not gradually become a waste. When an individual forms alliance and join forces with the enemy in outright rebellion against God this leads to  waste (2 Chronicles 25:6-8). Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah nearly lost his life when he followed the king of Israel to battle (2 Kings 18:28-31). He failed to realize that when you're in agreement with an enemy of God, you'll easily turn yourself to a waste. Note that Samson made himself accessible to the enemy because of his unholy desire to be joined in marriage with the Philistines despite his parent's persuasion. He disregarded his Nazarite vow and was eventually wasted with the enemies (Judges 16:16-18 &25). Satan and his agents will toy, maneuver and manipulate you as long as you are in evil union. God strictly warned Solomon but his love for strange women led him to idol worship which became his eventual ruin.

Pride is always known to be a precursor of waste. Pride is a waster! Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall (Proverbs 16:18, Isaiah 5:15). Uzziah was a man of great exploit but be became leprous and while he yet lived, his son-Jotham ruled in his stead. Oh, what a waste, he was cut off (isolated) till the time of his death. In 2 Chronicles 26:16, " But when he was strong his heart was lifted up, to his destruction, for he transgressed against the LORD his God by entering the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense." His pride was manifested when he assumed the role of a priest and insisted on performing their duty though he was only anointed to be a king. When you engage yourself in an assignment you are not gifted, anointed or graced to perform, you  turn yourself into a waste.  However, the young man who succeeded him had learnt his lessons, he wouldn't even go in at all to the temple (2 Chronicles 27:2). Also, in 2 Chronicles 32:25 King Hezekiah manifested pride. Though it was noted in verse 26 that he repented and one would think that he's sober but his true identity (his heart) was revealed in verse 31. Besides, boasting, vaunting and vanity are other evidences of waste. When an individual in not delivered from competition, he is a waste. Man of God when you are preparing other for heaven you are not planning to go, you are a waste (2 Corinthians 11:13-15). Desire for fame, honour, recognition and accumulation of wealth at the expense of eternity is an indication of a wasted life. Remember, King Solomon later regretted his evil passion for vanities of life which he greatly craved (Ecclesiastes 2:10-11).

When you live in flagrant disobedience to the dictates and commands of God, you'll become a waste. A man of God was forbidden by God to stay back, eat or drink after his declaration against the altar at Bethel, but he decided to disobey God because of an old prophet's false claim. He stayed back, ate and drank contrary to divine instruction. Unfortunately, it was the same old prophet who lured him that declared his doom (1 Kings 13:21-22 & 26). What a waste when a creature rebels against his creator (Isaiah 45:9). We all know that the word "woe" is not a fun-filled, fanciful or pleasant word but it connotes waste and destruction. Jonah's experience shows repercussion of self-will and rebellion. Jonah depicts a typical example of a disobedient servant of God, who finds out in a hard way that God was serious about His assignment, and that He would not change His mind about using him to preach to Nineveh (Jonah 1:1-17). God severely dealt with him and he realized that he was the cause of the misfortune. There would have been no need for wastage and loses (verse 5) if he had obeyed. But they suffered loss of their goods even after calling on their gods. Unfortunately, despite all their efforts to still the storm, they couldn't, it was all an effort in futility.

However, they acknowledged that Jonah serves the living God. Take note that in verse six they requested that he should call on his God. They thought they could help or salvage the situation, but they couldn't. So, an emergency meeting was summoned to forestall the impending doom and likely destruction (verse11). These people were afraid of the wrath of God (verse 10), but Jonah never realized that his rebellion and self-will will still be used by God to turn souls to Himself. He knew it was needless for him to call upon God because all that happened was as a result of his disobedience. He then proffer a solution for them and it was indeed a perfect one (verse 12). So, there was respite, no more storm, no more loss after Jonah was thrown into the sea (verse 15). And interestingly, these people found their way back to God by themselves (verse16). Fear gripped them, so,  they offered sacrifice to God whom Jonah disobeyed. Though they didn't know God, yet, they vowed to Him. What a wonderful event but Jonah was not allowed to lead them in repentance prayers, he was already thrown into the sea and was swallowed immediately by a fish. And there in the belly of the fish he started his marathon fasting and prayer of repentance, rededication and consecration. And when Jonah was ready for the God after his prayers in chapter 2, God just spoke to the fish and it vomited Jonah at the shore of Nineveh.

Besides, there is a waste when oppressors triumph over the oppressed (Ecclesiastes 4:1). When injustice  seems to prevail, there is a waste (Ecclesiastes 3:16). Had it not been for the timely intervention of Esther and Modeccai, the waster-Haman would have annihilated a whole nation (Esther 7:4-6). Job was almost wasted by the devil who constantly challenged him before God. In a single day, he lost everything he had. It was terrible, his suffering was great because the waster besieged him (Job 1: 13-19). But thank God, the great restorer graciously recompensed him (Job 42:12-17). Similarly, the children of Israel were mesmerized by the Midianites who used to spoil them until God raised Gideon to challenge those Midianites (Judges 6: 3-6, 13-14). Hezekiah sincerely pleaded with God to be delivered form the hand of the waster who was poised and determined to waste (2 Kings 19:17-19). And if there is fainting, doubt, fear, unbelief, there will be a waste like it happened to the children of Israel who cried, complained and believed that they cannot enter into the land of their inheritance because  of the giants-the children of Anak (Numbers 13:31-33). Indeed they got what they wanted, truly they were wasted in the wilderness, and their wish was granted by God (Numbers 14: 1-3, 26-29).

To curtail waste, there is a singular provision and that is going back to God as an individual, a group, church, family or a nation. The immense role of the priests, spiritual leaders and the ministers of God cannot be overlooked. The priests must arise against wastage in the land and in the church (Joel 1:4, 6-7, 2:17) then, there would be restoration (Joel 2:18-26). There would be no more wastage for the LORD (the lion of the tribe of Judah) who is stronger than the devil the roaring lion will do His awesome work and perform His unusual acts ( Isaiah 28: 21, Joel 3:16-20, Jeremiah 33:9-10 & 13). It is God and him alone who can deliver form the grip of the wasters. God has a redemptive plan for His people. Not only the spiritual leaders but the physical leaders also have significant role to play like Josiah and Hezekiah. King Hezekiah lamented as he noted and affirmed idolatry as the cause of the evil in the land (2 Chronicles 29:6-9). He purged and cleansed the temple from the effects of contamination of idolatry of the past leaders (2 Chronicles 29:4-19) and he restored true worship (2 Chronicles 29:20-30, 30:12, 21-27, 31:1-21).

Will you go with this man ?

Then they called Rebekah and said to her, Will you go with this man?" And she said, "I will go." Genesis 24:58.

The camels are coming! Here is Rebekah well positioned to fulfill divine purpose (Genesis chapter 24 verse 15). With notable attributes, she was beautiful, chaste, and undefiled (verse16). She also possessed godly character (verses 17-20). She drew water not only for Eliezer but for the camels too and she did not know she was fulfilling the heart felt prayers of Eliezer, Abraham's servant (verse 13-14, 21-28). After he drank and the camels were watered, he talked with her and discovered that God had led him to the house of his master's family to get a wife for Isaac. Eliezer gave gifts to Rebekah and she excitedly ran to inform her mother's household what had happened (verse 29-32). Eliezer was invited and he told them how God led him in his journey to the right place and person. However, her parents couldn't hide their worry and concern for their dear daughter, though they seemed to believe the story of the stranger (Abraham's servant) Genesis 24:33-48. Although it was of God, but still with some apprehension they wanted Rebekah who was directly involved to give her word. Even her brother-Laban had concern for his sister and he also asked, "Will you go with this man? They needed to ask her the question. So, Rebekah, Bethuel's daughter was confronted with a serious and pertinent question after she had heard the story of the stranger she met who supposedly and surprisingly turned to be an answer to her future dreams and aspirations. Her joy was momentarily disturbed at the time of her greatest excitement. She was expected to make a choice and her response will be very crucial in determining her future destiny! She had to decide either to follow Abraham's servant (Eliezer) so that she can meet with her future husband (Isaac) or to decline.

In verses 50-51, they concluded that since it came from the Lord they won't tamper with it, "Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, "The thing comes from the LORD; we cannot speak to you either bad or good. "Here is Rebekah before you; take her and go, and let her be your master's son's wife, as the LORD has spoken." But her brother, Laban, and her mother desired that she should stay at least ten more days because it all happened unexpectedly. They were not ready to release her into the next phase of her life, not expecting her to leave them immediately because they loved her. However, Abraham's servant replied them in verse 56, "And he said to them, Do not hinder me, since the LORD has prospered my way; send me away so that I may go to my master." A very wise man, he was emphatic, and said no more delay. How could I have gone this far journey, undertake all the risks and God been gracious, favourable and kind to me, prospered my journey, granted my request and enabled me to find Rebekah for Isaac, hence, nothing must be allowed to disturb this process. I want to see it to its completion. In the same vein, the Holy Spirit is that Eliezer who is urging the bride (the church) and the bride to be (the unbelievers) to get ready quickly to meet their groom (Jesus) the husband of the church. No more delay! The bible says that (He) the Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin, thus bringing sinners to Jesus. It is the Holy Spirit that convicts sinners as there cannot be genuine conversion without the conviction of the Holy Spirit. And as many who will yield to Him, they must be committed to follow on. Lack of commitment is the genesis of inconsistency. There must be commitment to the cause of Christ!

In Genesis chapter 24 verse 58,"Then they called Rebekah and said to her,"Will you go with man?" And she said, "I will go." She was persuaded by the stranger's story and affirmed her decision to go with him. To an unknown man and future, a lot of things at stake, yet, she believed that there is something more for her. To have been really favoured to have this offer she rightly responded yes! Her answer in the affirmative, and in good spirit she consented and was willing to go with Eliezer. Her decision was a surprise to everyone because it will not take her years, months or days to resolve. And all the fears, worry and anxiety of her brother and parents could not deter her. Her quest for joy and fulfillment in life made her resolute and determined to follow a total stranger (Abraham's servant) to meet another stranger (Isaac) whom she would have to live with forever. Her joy would have been short-lived if she had answered otherwise when asked the question "Will you go with this man? If her response was negative, that may have been an end to the plan and purpose of God for her life. And should she have answered contrarily, it may mar her destiny for life. No second chance, she may not be allowed to have a repeat of the episode because Eliezer would have been cleared of the oath he made with Abraham regarding seeking a wife for Isaac. Eliezer would have been justified for giving Rebekah the opportunity and he may even not be willing to go back to persuade her to marry his master's son.

Everyone comes to a point in life when crucial decision(s) will be taken. Ruth, the Moabitess, heard about the God of Israel through her relationship with her late husband and his family members. Despite the death of her husband, she made a sincere decision to serve the God of the Jews. Her situation being a young widow notwithstanding will not debar her from worshipping the God of Israel. Her mind was made up concerning her choice and decision for life. The God of Israel will become her God and she was even determined to die in Israel. No wonder a whole book of the bible was devoted to her. In the book of Ruth chapter 1 verses 14-16, Ruth insisted on following her mother-in-law to Israel, unlike her sister-in-law Orpah who owed her mother-in-law only a kiss but had no serious commitment. Commitment they say is the mother of consecration. But Ruth said,  "Entreat me not to leave thee.....your people shall be my people, And your God my God." I perceived Rebekah saying the same thing, "It's good to follow this man, it worth giving this marriage offer a consideration."  She must have thought about it that there will be security, good future and fulfillment for her. So, she made up her mind, no one will dissuade or discourage her. A woman of purpose, resolute and determined. A woman of destiny! Her response was I will go with man. At least, it pays off though she may not know what lies ahead but she would not preempt, rather she believed that good and better future is secured for her. And like the wordings of the song, "Follow I will follow thee my LORD, follow every passing day, my tomorrow are all known to thee, thou wilt lead me all the way." 

Solomon, the wisest king made a remarkable statement in the book of proverbs chapter 20 verse 6, "Most men will proclaim each his own goodness, But who can find a faithful man?"  Though a faithful man may be very scarce but there is one man who over the years has been tested, proven and found faithful. His name is Jesus. He can be trusted for He's ever true and He worth following. In Him alone is true joy, comfort, fulfillment, life and life more abundantly. In Christ Jesus our death to sin is a fact, one eternally to be relied on (Hebrews 7:22, 25-26, Romans 6:10-11). Will you go with this man? Now this serious question comes to you as it came to Rebekah and your response is very crucial at this moment judging from the trend and emerging events. Even the Athenians gave Paul the Apostle audience and this affords him the opportunity to share the gospel with them. For they were always curious to tell or know something new and that was their nature (Acts 17:21). So, in Act chapter 17 verse 30-31, Paul told them the new thing they never heard, though some mocked him, yet, some believed and joined him (verses 32-34). Similarly, in Acts 17:3b-4, some were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, "This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ. And some of them were persuaded: and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas." At Berea, according to verse 12, Paul also preached and many believed, "Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men."

Therefore, whenever God stretches out His hands of mercy towards us, our response must be prompt and be always positive. We need to recall that the salvation of our soul is the will of God with promised eternal life (Hebrews 10:36-39). However, if anyone fails to acknowledge and follow this man Jesus, note what the bible says will happen to such in proverbs chapter one verse 32. Many have refuted, rejected and despised; unfortunately, they have done this to their own detriment. You too if you want you can run away from Him now, but if you outrun death then you are a good runner. For many are in hell today because they thought they were alright, they refused God's offer of salvation. And we know assuredly that anyone or anything that opposes the word of God is from Satan, for no one can boast as long as we are on this side of eternity. And that's why the bible says in Proverbs 8:36, "But he who sins against me wrong his own soul: All those who hate me love death."  Therefore, the best thing to do as recommended by King Solomon in Proverbs 9:6, "Forsake foolishness and live, And go in the way of understanding." And the way of understanding is the way of Jesus, for He said I am the way, the truth and the life.

According to Isaiah 59 verse 7-8, as many who will not go with Jesus will have no peace. The fate of sinners is pathetic! Remember, Rebekah had not seen Isaac before but believed all that Eliezer (Abraham's servant) told her. Many have not seen Jesus nor had revelation of His person before but believe what the bible says about Him. We believe what His servants the prophets, pastors, Evangelists, Apostles and so on say about Him. More importantly, we believe the witness of the Holy Spirit concerning Him. Rebekah hastened, she did not hesitate but accepted the offer to become the bride of Isaac as she responded: "I will go." The camels are coming! Will you go with this man? The Holy Spirit is at work now getting the bride ready to meet the groom. Are you resolved to follow Jesus? The wagon is ready (God's provision of salvation through His Son Jesus). Will you join the wagon? You have to join this wagon! Further delay may be dangerous. And we can say as the song writer puts:

I am resolved no longer to linger,

Charmed by the world's delight;

Things that are higher, things that are nobler,

These have allured my sight.

I will hasten to him, hasten so glad and free;

Jesus, greatest, highest, I will come to thee

I am resolved to go to the Saviour,

Leaving my sin and strife;

He is the true one, He is the just one,

He has the words of life.

I am resolved and who will go with me?

Come friends without delay;

Taught by the bible, led by the Spirit,

We'll walk the heavenly way.

False security

There shall be no foreign god among you, Nor shall you worship any foreign god. Psalm 81:9

These days, many are treading on dangerous path though feel secured and unharmed because of the graciousness and the loving kindness of God which they've constantly enjoyed. Because God lavishly bestowed on us so great His mercies, some taking it for granted dabbled into evil and regrettably dammed their souls. God cannot be mocked for whatever a man sows that he will reap. Little wonder the bible says: "He rains ruin upon the strong, So that fury comes upon their fortress."(Amos 5:9). For many, in a bid to get a position or retain power; gain control and dominate others have committed various atrocities. They are involved in dubious practices, occultism, deception, falsehood (camouflage) of all shades and subsequently uncertainties now characterize our world. And this desperate desire for fast and quick results; tussle for power, fame and money has led people and nations into chains and captivity of darkness. The old order is crumbling fast and our world is now getting complicated by the forces and systems in place. To worsen this, sense of false security is now rampant. There's no true regard or fear of God in the hearts of many, only few seem to be truly taking careful thought of their actions. Recall that the psalmist says: "My flesh tremble for fear of You, And I am afraid of your judgement." (Psalm 119:20). However, it seems as if we are no longer mindful of God's judgement! Even believers are so affected, many are getting disturbed, agitated, distracted and frustrated because of the current political and economic situation. While some are prone to compromise their faith, others are already yielding to temptation.

God is outrightly not in the scene and everyone does as he pleases not minding the repercussion, or possibly believing that God does not see and will not require it from them: "Yet, they say, The LORD does not see, Nor does the God of Jacob understand" (Psalm 94:7). The bible also says in Proverbs chapter 15 verse 3, "The eyes of the LORD are in every place, Keeping on the evil and the good." Up till now, many are substituting the living God with idols and demonic spirits in order to empower and fortify themselves and this is false security! The bible says in Psalm 96 verse 5, "For all the gods of the people are idols, But the LORD made the heavens."  implacable, unbending, resolute and determined to pursue personal agenda that boosts ego and engender pride  despite God's passionate plea for repentance and renunciation of evil. And so proudly have they invented evil, forgetting that whosoever is proud is cursed (Psalm 119:21). It has gone so terribly bad now that many are entering into evil covenants, like Manasseh (2 Chronicles 33:1-9) using diabolical powers and making satanic bargains just to get their evil wishes ad desires accomplished. They fail to realize that when anyone covers himself with any power not of God, it is a false security, an effort in futility ! The scriptures says in Jeremiah 2:13, "For my people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns-broken cisterns that can hold no water." David also speaks of their doom in psalm 16 verse 4, "Their sorrow shall be multiplied who hasten after another god."  Satan desires to be worshipped either directly or indirectly in these last days and many have willfully submitted themselves unto him. Little wonder the atmosphere is tense and contaminated; our land terribly polluted with increased ritual killings, human and animal sacrifices and massive blood shed that God hates, for that's why God charged the Israelites against blood shed (Numbers 35:33-34).

There's great intensity of satanic activities going on, fortified strongholds are established, local and international evil powers have been contacted, consulted and used for empowerment. Our land is indeed defiled and cursed (Ezekiel 36:18, Isaiah 24:4-6). The shed blood of the innocent ones are crying for justice and vengeance. There's darkness, gross darkness that's covering the earth (Isaiah 60:2). And really, there is a spirit in the air promoting evil, killings and the like. Yet, we are incapacitated though various degree of disasters, tragedies and evils are happening because the evil powers consulted by the wicked people need blood to service their evil covenants. We do know that when things around are been touched negatively, satanic powers are operating. And as believers, we need to act promptly and plead for God's intervention. The children of  Israel have also been going back and forth into idolatry (Judges 2:10-13). Despite God's repeated warnings (Leviticus 19:31, 20:6, Isaiah 8:19), an entire generation did not know the Lord but constantly disregard God's instruction (Deuteronomy 7:1-5). At a time, Prophet Jeremiah reveal to them the counsel of God but they rebelled and told him that they wouldn't obey God. In Jeremiah chapter 44 verse 16-17: "As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not listen to you! But we will certainly do whatever has gone out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour our drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we have plenty of food, were well-off, and saw no trouble." However, Jeremiah in his response (verse 21-28) made known the reason why God's stern position is unmistakable so that they would not have a false hope or security.

Apparently, many are ignorant of the fact that God rules in the affairs of men (Daniel 4:17). The bible says, 'The LORD has established His throne in heaven. And His kingdom rules over all." God wants to be involved in the activities of men. David, a man after God's heart acknowledges this in Psalm 33 verse 11: "The counsel of the LORD stands forever, The plans of His heart to all generation." Solomon also remark in proverbs 19:21, "There are many plans in a man's heart, Nevertheless the LORD's counsel-that will stand." Though many are forcefully exerting energy and using all available resources to ensure and establish their evil passion, yet, God's intention and purposes are unchanging. In fact, countless evil schemes, devices, machinations and manipulations and so on are going on. And many are thoughtless of their outrageous and dangerous decisions and actions. Like Abimelech, there are those who are lusting after and desiring what God does not want to give them. Jotham, the only surviving son Gideon who escaped death gave a parable concerning Abimelech's conspiracy with the people of Shechem and the killing of the remaining sons of Gideon in his desperate desire to rule. Jotham  likened Abimelech to a bramble tree that has no strength or support but can consume and be easily consumed. In Judges chapter 9 verse 14-15, "Then all the trees said to the bramble, You come and reign over us! And the bramble said to the trees, if in truth you anoint me as king over you, Then come and take shelter in my shade: But if not, let fire come out of the bramble. And devour the cedars of Lebanon!"  Abimelech eventually died a tragic death (Judges 9:20, 46, 53) after destroying the people of Shechem as foretold by Jotham (Judges 9:20, 44-45, 47-49, 52).

However, the psalmist says, "Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope is in the LORD his God. (Psalm 146:5). The reason is mainly because God is the source and supplier of true security but He can only help and assist those who trust in Him. The psalmist further buttressed his point making us realize that "He (God) does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of man. The LORD takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in those who hope in His mercy." (Psalm 147:10-11). Prophet Isaiah similarly counselled in Isaiah 45 verse 22, "Look to Me, and be saved, All you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other."  When everyone and everything fails God cannot and will not, for He is the provider of all that we may ever need. After a notable miracle was done, Peter and John were arrested and brought to question by the Sahendrin. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Peter responded and called the attention of the rulers and the elders of Israel to the truth and fact they have been perfectly dodging (Acts 4:11-12). So, he said, you builders (leaders) have rejected the Jesus (the chief corner stone), this stone you cannot avoid, for He will remain prominent and indispensable being our true surety and security though cleverly you have despised and rejected Him. Jesus will remain the only solution to the problems and plight of men!

Affliction of the righteous

For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4:17)

Whenever the righteous are afflicted, the aftermath is to showcase the power and glory of God. As in the case of Lazarus who was sick unto death (John chapter 11 verses 1&6), but Jesus said in verse 40 that it was for God's name to be glorified. However, our attitude and disposition matters during the time of affliction. From the same book of John chapter 11, there were two different characters, Mary and Martha sisters (siblings) of Lazarus who was sick. They sent for Jesus but He delayed and eventually their brother died. Later, Jesus went there with His disciples. These two women had different attitude and disposition to the same situation, and definitely they had different results. Martha arose in haste to meet Jesus and confronted Him about her brother's death. Despite Jesus elaborate exhortation on the resurrection power that is so viable (potent) to bring the dead back to life (verse 25) and to keep the living from dying (verse 26), she went headlong with her argument, she never truly believed that her brother would rise again as Jesus told her in verse 23. Her reaction was negative and nothing meaningful came out of their discussion. Unfortunately, Martha was indecisive and she had a vague understanding of who Jesus is. She lacked the true knowledge of His abilities and capabilities. So, she left Jesus and went back home to inform Mary about Jesus arrival. However, it was only the disposition of Mary that changed everything. In verse 32, she fell down at His feet, remember they both spoke the same words (compare verse 21 and 32) "Lord, if you have been here, my brother would not have died." When Mary spoke and wept with other Jews around her weeping, Jesus groaned and wept. Mary wasn't casual like her sister Martha, but she had the virtue and decorum to approach the Master. The bible recorded that she did one thing that her sister never did. In verse 32, "Then when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."  Mary placed no further demand on Jesus but waited for His response. Jesus couldn't hold back His tears, so, He commanded the stone to be rolled away, then the Jews noted and said, "See how much He loved him! Little did they know that it was Mary's attitude that captured the Master and changed everything.

The real pursuit, desire and goal of any serious Christian should be to make heaven at last. So, when God passes us through tests, trials, afflictions and tribulations to burn off the chaffs in our lives, prune us, bring out His beauty in us, we must love Him, reference and honour Him knowing that all things are working together for our good though the situation may be unpleasant. The way to heaven is narrow and as Jesus said, not so many people want to go through it (few there be that find it). Even a song writer wrote, "it's not an easy road."  Satan has set many traps for believers but God has enough grace to see us through to the other side of eternity. To be an overcomer and truly triumph in spite of life's trials, battles, persecutions and afflictions, it will require that one stays helplessly focused on God like Mary did, drawing strength from Him continually. It will only take a quiet assurance of His presence and power to sustain us. And we need to know that whatever we may suffer here on earth, the bible calls them "our light affliction which is but for a moment, and not only that but it worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4:17).  Therefore, we need not be disturbed by the present unseemly physical circumstances. The devil as we know is fighting everyone, no one is exempted. The enraged dragon according to Revelation 12:17 is out to trouble and attack, "And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandment of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ." And as we are leaving the city of destruction (spiritual Egypt-a place of bondage), on a voyage to our eternal destination, that is heaven, our promised land (our spiritual Canaan land), just like the children of Israel we are bound to pass through the wilderness (this present evil world). Temptations, trials, persecutions, afflictions and so on are many and abound on the way of the true pilgrims. That's why the persecuted church was admonished in Revelation chapter 2 verse 9, "I know your works, tribulation and poverty (but you are rich) and I know the blasphemy of those who say they were Jews and were not, but are a synagogue of Satan."

Jesus, in His preparation for the final phase of His assignment on earth, needed Moses, the law commander (Deuteronomy 33:4), and Elijah, the prophet to appear to Him to succor and encourage Him because of what He was about to face. The account in Luke 9:31 vividly showed that Moses and Elijah appeared in glory with Jesus. These were unique personalities, men with rare grace and anointing (ministers and servant of the living God in the old testament). Both Moses and Elijah had their own share of affliction while here on earth, so, they came to comfort Him having passed through similar experiences. Moses taught the children of Israel the law and the commandment of God. He introduced the living God to them but he nearly missed heaven because the people whom he loved and led out of Egypt provoked him and made him sinned against God. However, God had mercy on him and buried him. God buried him else the children of Israel who were responsible for his failure and inability to enter Canaan land would have turned his tomb to another place of worship (idolize) him. God denied him entry into Canaan land because he spoke harshly, he did not reference God before the children of Israel, and he smote the rock twice instead of touching it ( Numbers 20: 7-12, 27:14, Deuteronomy 3:26, 34: 4-6). 

Elijah on the other hand, demonstrated the raw power of God, he proved to the people that the Lord He is God. On mount Carmel when he called on God, a miracle happened, fire fell from heaven, and he executed the 450 prophets of Baal. When Jezebel the queen heard all that he had done, she pronounced death on him because she purposed to revenge for the killing of the prophets of Baal. So, Elijah fled for his life, depressed, dejected and lonely (1 King 19:2-4). Elijah was also burdened, overwhelmed and distressed because of the idolatrous situation in the land that he even wished to die. And it will take God's counsel and intervention to sustain him. God fed him through the ravens and he received divine strength. Later, God took him up to heaven in a chariot of fire. However, Jesus came to reconcile men back to God and to establish the new covenant because both Moses and Elijah operated under the old covenant. He healed the sick, cast out demons, preached the gospel and did a lot of miracles. Yet, for no justifiable cause they decided to kill Him. The elders, priests, Sadducees  and Pharisees were threatened by His exploits and would not have Him to rule over them. Jesus knew that He would die for it was part of the redemption plan.  And His shed blood would be the seal of the new covenant. Although Elijah had no earthly burial, but Jesus will have to die, He would be buried but resurrect. Moses and Elijah therefore appeared to Him in glory because they triumphed and overcame at last. The time of affliction is also the time we need to move closer to God in prayer. All the saints in the bible for example Abraham, Daniel (Daniel 6:1-17), Joseph (Genesis 37:24-28, 39:20), Job (Job 4:7-10), Jeremiah (Lamentation 3:1, 26, 52-57, 61-62), Paul (2 Timothy 3:11, 2 Corinthians 4:7-10) and so on in the Bible at one time or the other had trials and afflictions. Afflictions are sure to come to heaven bound saints (Psalm 34:19).

Affliction will turn to our advantage if we do not despair. Faith is always established, improved and multiplied by affliction when we realize that God, the designer, creates and executes His projects and plans for His creation. In the book of Exodus chapter 15 verses 1-21, the children of Israel sang and praised God for His intervention. Who would have known that there is a God that can avenge His own children. For God arose on behalf of His beloved ones, all the world feared because with His outstretched arms He brought them out of affliction in Egypt. God brought numerous plagues on the Egyptians, for instance, there was light in Goshen but darkness in Egypt for three days. The darkness was so thick that it could be felt. They have already seen the wrath of God after all they've been through. The Egyptians were still mourning the loss of their first born and the first born of their animals when they encouraged themselves to bring the children of Israel back into bondage and affliction. The Egyptians stubbornly pursued the children of Israel but God undertook for them. God parted the red sea for them to cross over but their enemy who had continuously afflicted them for over 400 years sank as lead inside the sea. Troubles that believers overcome often become a stepping stone to higher ground. And the more trouble believers face, the more the opportunity to demonstrate the victory of God through faith (Isaiah 63:9). However, when affliction come we can sing as the song writer succinctly put:

I thank God for the mountains, and I thank Him for the valleys.

I thank Him for the storms He brought me through,

For if I'd never had a problem I wouldn't know that He could solve,

I'd never know what faith in God can do

Through it all (2x), I've learned to depend upon His word.

When you set out to please God, people will speak about you, gossip, even plot evil against you. Also, when God begins to promote you, people will be jealous of you as it happened to Isaac in Genesis 26:1-3. But the more they envied and afflicted him, the more he prospered. At times, affliction permitted by God is intended to restore the backslider (Hosea 5:15, 6:1), correct the disobedient and self-willed (Jonah 2:1-2, Lamentation 3:39, Proverbs 3:11), prune, test or refine (Romans 5:3, James 1:2-4, 2 Corinthians 12:7-9, Psalm 66:10-12, Proverbs 24:16). God allow some circumstances in our lives so that we could pray. However, the worst thing that causes affliction is sin. Sin is a stubborn stain! There is serious danger and trouble if Judah have to go into captivity. Judah went into captivity slaving away with terrible affliction ( Lamentation 1:5) and the reason for her captivity was sin. In verse 9, immorality, evil passion, physical and spiritual adultery brought her desolation, she was blinded to destiny and she mortgaged her destiny because of sin. To worsen her situation, she had no rest, she was spoiled and robbed by the enemies, her pleasant things were stolen and persecutors overcame her in dire straits (verse 10). Unfortunately, the enemy prevailed over her (verse 16). Therefore, sin(s) must be repented of if found to be the cause of affliction.

Unity: The church factor

A strong church is defined as the unification of all members of the body having opportunity to develop their individual spiritual gift(s). As a member of the body of Christ (church), to qualify for a glorious service or render any service to God requires unity with other members. Unity therefore becomes an essential factor for Christian service. Because there's only one recognized body (the universal church) and one head, Jesus. And really there is an inheritance for the saints in the light (Colossians 1:12). However, the only condition for this inheritance to be obtained is when the saints are in the light and not in darkness. Disunity is an epitome of darkness! Satan has launched an attack against the church and has successfully caused division in the body of Christ. The enemy has perfected his evil work disuniting us. Demons are jealous of God's heritage in Christian's life. So, they oppose the church and anything of God. If God will open our eyes to see how much these demons hate us, we will not allow disunity among us.

Jesus rebuked the Pharisees who supposedly ought to be custodian of law but rather they were found breaking the law and living in hypocrisy. Instead of repenting of their sins and changing their evil ways, the Pharisees were seriously after Jesus seeking how they will trap him through his words. They claimed to be spiritual leaders and rulers of the people of God, yet, they detested Jesus who was approved and sent by God. Despite undeniable evidences that Jesus was truly from God, they hated him with passion (Luke 11:53-54). In the same manner, there are ministers of the gospel who cannot see eye to eye with one another. It grow so worse that they dare not sit beside each other. Unfortunately, we dwell so much on our differences that we often forget that we are members of one body going to the same heaven. And if here on earth we can't live together what will happen when we eventually get to heaven. Sadly, if we continue this way, we wouldn't be able to defeat our common enemy who has perpetrated and he's still perpetrating evil in our midst. Several satanic yokes persists because of the putting forth of the finger (Isaiah 58:9). And why don't we stop allowing Satan and his host to take advantage of our willful disobedience to the commandment of God in Ephesians 4:1-6. It's obvious that humility, love, and submission are wanting and pride has played a great role in dividing us.

The church that supposed to be a body has been fragmented and consequently cannot stand as a whole. Hatred, suspicion, bitterness, resentment, malice, envy, jealousy, secret fear, insecurity, animosity, backbiting, gossip, holier than thou attitude, inferiority and superiority complex (pride) and so on has shattered us. I wonder why the church is so disjointed and disunited! Jesus the head of the church stands aloof watching because of the disjointedness of His body. He is not a monster so He cannot be head over many bodies. He is supposed to be the head over a single body. And that's why Jesus responded the Pharisees who believed that He was casting out demons by Beelzebub that "A kingdom that is divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand" (Matthew 12:25). It's a spiritual principle that Jesus made them to realize because if diseases and infirmities are believed to be caused by demons, casting out demons by the powers that caused it will be working or fighting against oneself. We are members of one body, but at the back we speak evil against one another, stab each other at the back (backbiting). And this empowers the enemy to gain access to do more harm in our midst. We hardly pray and intercede for one another but busy ourselves with the ministry of criticism and fault finding. We are quick at judging other ministries and churches. No true love, care, concern and consideration for one another. Everyone is self-centered and self-conceited. However, God is not going to change His mind regarding the church in this generation and Jesus will not be the head over a segregated, fragmented, disjointed and disunited body. He is coming for a glorious church without spot and wrinkle. And we can play our part in securing that glorious church now! Because there's only one heaven with no denominational tag. It's interdenominational, and it is the church of the called out, redeemed and blood washed. 

Though we cannot deny the fact that there are wolves among the sheep. Agents of darkness who have transformed  themselves into the ministers of the gospel even with big and large congregation. Instead of complaining and talking endlessly about them, we need to pray for them. We are to intercede particularly because of the sincerely ignorant souls they are leading to hell fire. There's a lot of evil going on in our world and it is more terrible when its happening in the church. But the bible has this record in the book of Daniel when God revealed to Daniel the situation at the end of the world. In Daniel 12:10, "Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand."  It was predicted and we are in that season right now. As we have the wicked doing wickedly, God says there are many that will be purified, made white, and refined. This is not an overstatement, this is the bible and what will happen if and when we bring down the hand of God on behalf of the church.

There is only one place where God commands blessing, it is in the place of unity. According to Psalm 133, though a popular and commonly referenced chapter of the bible on unity, it is loaded and it contains the healing pills for the body of Christ. Real spiritual blessing abounds where there is unity. Individuals and churches may increase in material and financial blessings, notwithstanding, the richness of blessing that God wants to give abounds where unity is found. God dwells where there is love and unity. So, it implies that there will be no real blessing or life where there's disunity though there may be superficial ones. The bible says, "For there the Lord commanded blessings and life forevermore. Real blessings descend, then life follows! It is heaven's blessing. It is like the dew of Hermon descending upon the mountain of Zion; that means it comes directly from above, it's from God, not man made and it flows down from the pulpit to the pew, leadership to the follower-ship, everyone partakes of it. It is as the oil that runs down from the edge of Aron's garment, it has to flow down to the people. Life forever abounds, no death wherever God's blessing is but unity is a precursor of this blessing. It therefore infers that where there is unity, there is life both physical and spiritual.

Deborah sang and made beautiful remarks about the contributions of men and women who conquered the Midianites. In Judges 5:15, 18 and 24-27, she narrated in detail the involvement and the role played by the tribes of Israel. In Judges 5:2 &9 she noted that the people willingly offered themselves. Barak went, Deborah followed, and the sons of Naphtali and Zebulum were the valiant men who fought the battle of the Lord with Barak (Judges 4:6).  The significant role of Jael Heber's wife was remarkable. Despite the fact that Sisera had 900 chariots of iron and the Midianites had continuously suppressed, oppressed and tormented the Israelites  for 20 years, yet, God wrought great deliverance for them from their captivity though they had no single chariot of iron. In Judges 4:23-24, the bible says, "So on that day God subdued Jabin king of Canaan in the presence of the children of Israel. And the hand of the children of Israel grew stronger and stronger against Jabin king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan." There is strength in unity! It was not ordinarily by their power that they subdued their enemy and his kingdom that was impossible for them to conquer, but it was because God was involved in their battle. God ordered it, they obeyed, acted promptly and were united. So, they discomfited and defeated their enemy. God came down and helped them subdued Jabin (the dominant factor) all because of their unity.

To defeat our enemy (Satan) and halt all the activities of his agents deployed against the church, unity is an essential factor. To rebel against evil and demand for justice, there's need for unity. There are hesitant powers who have vowed not to go just like the Canaanites who determined to dwell in the land with the children of Israel (Judges 1:27) but it will take unified effort to route them. Unity is really a major necessity to bring down the hand of God to fight for the church and invade the host of darkness (spiritual Midianites) who spoil and destroy us. It  will also be needed to deal with the evil powers that have been doing what they please against the church, they saw the broken edge and they came because we are not truly united as a body. More importantly, unity is highly recommended for congregational repentance. Before Achan was singled out when he committed sin in taking the accursed things, God addressed the entire nation as a sinner (Joshua 7:11&13). God told Joshua "There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before the enemy until you take away the accursed thing from among you." Indeed the whole nation was affected by the sin of Achan. Sin is a plague that has capacity to destroy wherever it is found, its size or magnitude notwithstanding. Sin offers pleasure that does not last to Achan but later brought judgment on a whole nation. So, in unity we'll repent of the sins of the church, the sins of bitterness, envy, resentment, silent rivalry, jealousy, competition which are evil and have defiled us (Hebrews 12:15).

The man Jesus-His message

The prophet that has a dream, let him tell a dream; And he who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? says the LORD. Is not my word like a "fire"? says the LORD. And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces? Jeremiah 23:28-29.

Jesus came with the message of repentance to reconcile man back to God. He was sent primarily to bridge the gap between God and man, and to restore the relationship that formerly existed between  God and man. The theme of His message to the young ruler -Nicodemus was Ye must be born again. To the old or young, rich or poor, literate or illiterate, His message did not change. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and all other things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33). Even after his resurrection, the disciples on the way to Emmaus said "did not our heart burn within us as he speaks to us." They referred to the words of Jesus as fire that burns (Luke 24:32). Indeed the word of God is like fire that burns (Jeremiah 23:29). A single focused John the Baptist who was also the fore runner of Jesus declared the word of salvation to those who came to him in the wilderness. His words were like hammer breaking the hard hearted Jews and all those who sought after him. He preached a stern message on repentance and he wasn't apologetic at all. According to Matthew's account in the book of Matthew chapter 2 verse 2, "and saying repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand"  Despite his seemingly hard singular message on repentance, Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the regions around the Jordan went out to him. He had nothing palatable to offer them, yet they thronged him.  His intent was to do what he was sent to do, to prepare the people for their coming Messiah. In verse 7-12 of the same text, when he saw the many of the Pharisees and the Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? He did not change his message because of the Pharisees and the Sadducees, rather his tenacity increased and he preached repentance to them also.

In Colossians 1:18, Paul the Apostle preached Jesus Christ. Paul talked about his efforts and exploits to reveal Jesus. His central theme was Jesus and Him crucified (1 Corinthians 2:2 &4-5).  He further committed the preaching of Christ to faithful ministers like Ephraphras (Colossians 1:17). He enjoined Timothy, his son in the Lord, to preach the word because we are already in the time spoken about by Paul the Apostle in 2 Timothy 4:2-3. The desire of the Apostles was to perfect what was lacking in the believers and not just to be chatting away (1Tessalonians 3:10). Here is Paul the Apostle laying the precedence to follow. He told the Corinthian church in 2 Corinthians 2:12 &14 how he received from God and taught. The real essence of the word of God outlined in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and Hebrews 4:12 shows what the word we hear intends to achieve and this must be the goal (purpose) for preaching. The source of life is the word of God and nobody can do without it (Deuteronomy 8:3).

On the contrary, many ministers have turned the pulpits (sacred place) to discussion table on issues not relevant to the kingdom of God. Unfortunately, many members of the congregation are fed with chaff and their souls are famished because there are few ministers of the word. And that's why God spoke through his servant the prophet in Jeremiah 23:28-29, "The prophets who has a dream, let him tell a dream; And he who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully, What is the chaff to the wheat? "says the LORD, Is not my word like a fire?" To be a man of God, you must be a man of the word of God. But the church is now confronted  with a serious problem as there are many scribes than teachers (Mark 1:22). It is what we give that we'll get. An unprepared, unlearned minister cannot give what he doesn't have to his congregation. You cannot expect the congregation to outgrow you, except you expect them to avail themselves opportunity of enriching their souls through the ministry of other servants of God. And this is a serious matter because we are here talking about the undying souls of men and the need to prepare and furnish them for the soon appearing of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. There is already a problem and attending danger (heart of thorns) because for many, the word is choked and does not bring fruit to maturity due to cares of life, riches and pleasures (Mark4:18-19, Luke 8:7 &14). But a bigger problem ensues when the right word is not available or sown into a ready heart (fertile land). According to Luke 8:8 &15, there are those who are seriously yearning for the truth, but trouble comes when they are denied because the minister of the word is not prepared to give them the needed message. Hence, souls of the people are impoverished because the letter kills but the Spirit gives life.

Despite God's strict injunction in Deuteronomy chapter 12 verse 32 that no on should add or subtract from the commandments of God, messages and sermons have been twisted to suit the purpose of some so called ministers nowadays. Many tell lies, exaggerate and vaunt themselves just to make their preaching appealing to their hearers. They devote quality time to telling irrelevant stories just to secure attention and trust of their listeners. Their priority is not to give the word of life, but they are basically entertainers (Jeremiah 48:10). Some engage in evil and despise holy things, these are enemies of the cross of Christ. They encourage sins of all forms and shade such as seductive dressings and sexual perversion among members  as they see nothing wrong with it. No wonder there is no inspiration, no ministration, and no life coming from the pulpit whenever they preach. Some are into teaching of the commandment of men. Paul the Apostle warned Titus against such in Titus 1:14 "not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn from the truth." There are also those who are fond of exalting and preaching themselves, recounting their past achievements and exploits in the kingdom of God. They have failed to realize that it is not good to build on the old moves- of God. Just like Watchman Nee's saying-A man whose yesterday is like today lacks the sense of God's timing.

There is a great contrast between the messages of Jesus and most of our messages today. And it seems we have failed to realize that we are fighting an enraged enemy who is not taking things lightly with anyone (Revelation 12:17). If the few hours people stay in the church cannot be maximally utilized to fill them with the word of God needed to combat the forces of darkness and the evil world that wants to damn their soul, then there is problem. And those ministers who focus the attention of people on themselves and not on Jesus ought to know that it is just a waste of time because nothing worthwhile will come out of it. Jesus said, "And I if I be lifted up from the earth will draw all men unto me." It could literarily mean that after His ascension, His death and resurrection will be the basics of our salvation and through which many will have hope, believe on His and receive Him. At the same time, it could also mean that whenever and wherever Jesus is preached and exalted, many will be drawn to Him. God is beholding our world with rage and He is ready to unleash His wrath, Jesus is mourning and interceding for the church, but when would the ministers of the gospel change their erroneous teachings and centre their message on Jesus. When will they begin to prepare the church for the imminent coming of her Lord and Saviour. When would the pulpits acknowledge the lordship of Jesus Christ and preach Him and Him alone? 

When Jesus sent out the 12 disciples in Luke 9:1-5, He instructed them not to go with money, bag or food. Also, He sent out the 70 in Luke 10:1-4 and gave similar instruction. They were to go with no money, bag or food, the same instruction was given to two different sets of people but why? The reason is because of the possibility of their attention to shifted away from their assignment and be focused on material things. They have a single pursuit; they were sent out to preach the gospel and nothing else. They were not to be diverted from their original purpose. Jesus made them realize that the labourer is worthy of his wages (Luke 10:7) signifying that ministers of God deserve to be rewarded with monetary gifts and blessings. Paul the Apostle also affirmed this in his letter to the Corinthian church that if he ministered to them in the Spirt, it is not a sin for him to reap material thing, however, he exercised caution that in no instance should this liberty of his affect or put a blemish on the gospel he preaches (1Corinthians 9:12-15). This is a balanced truth! According to Deuteronomy 33:18-19, Zebulum and Issachar were praised and blessed because they were to reveal to the people the demands of God (call the people to mountain). Not physical but spiritual, they were to launch the people into deep experiences with God. They were to lead them to offer sacrifices of righteousness to God and in turn partake of the abundance of the seas and hidden treasures in the sand (great material blessings).

Even in the Old Testament, God repeatedly informed the priests and Levites that He the Almighty God is their portion and their inheritance ( Deuteronomy 18:2 & 5, Joshua 13:33, 18:19). However, He instructed the children of Israel to give to the priests and Levites (Deuteronomy 12:19). The same instruction was repeated in chapter 14 verse 27 so that the priests and the Levites can focus on their duty and service to God and not be busy search for the money. It is a normal and proper thing and it is expected of every child of God to give to the work of God and more importantly to the ministers of God. Hence, the ministers of God need not centre their messages on money always. And there should not be deceit, manipulations, witchcrafy (cunning craftiness) in the name prophesies and revelation to dupe, and drain  money out of the purses of the people. Making financial demands on the people at the expense of their soul is dangerous and will incur the wrath of God. Many gullible souls in dire  and desperate need for solutions to life's problems and challenges have fallen prey to these fake ministers who always demand for money (Philippians 3:19). And being innocent, often consent to the demands and dictates of these so called ministers of God who are out there to trick and exploit people. Most of those affected often did not make effort to know or find out about these fake ministers of God before giving them their money and properties. Unfortunately, as a result of their  unpleasant encounters and experiences, they have become hardened even against the true gospel. More harm is done than good by these enemies of the cross!

Yet, there are sincere and true seekers today who are really tired of the fun-fare, jokes, bedroom talks, chatting, and unbecoming words that cannot redeem soul uttered by ministers of God who have turned their pulpits to another thing entirely. Many are truly yearning to know God and have eternal life (John 17:3). The hearts of men are longing and desirous to be fed with the word of life. The undying souls are bored and tired of philosophy, motivational messages, and teachings. John the Baptist preached repentance (Mark 1:4-5), Jesus Christ preached repentance (Mark 1:14-15), and the disciples also preached repentance (Mark 6:12). Man of God, if I may ask what are you preaching?

The man Jesus-His ministry

But you have not so learned Christ Ephesians 4:20

Jesus patterned His ministry after the father. While He was here on earth, He did nothing except what the father instructed Him to do. He had no private agenda. Jesus wholly surrendered His will and life to carry out His divine assignment as He constantly sought to please the father and received directives from Him. There was much resemblance between Him and the father because He came from Him and did all His biddings (John 5:19, 6:38 and 14:10). Moses in the Old Testament also communed with God constantly to receive instruction on how to lead the children of Israel (Psalm 103:7). Moses sincere request in Exodus chapter 33 verse 13 was to know the ways of God and eventually God granted his request and he was able to see the glory of God (verse 22) although the Israelites only saw His acts. Similarly, Paul the Apostle wrote about his sole dependence on God who made him a minister of the gospel (2 Corinthians 3:4-6). And we could see that his ministry was patterned after Jesus. No wonder he said, "imitate me (follow me), just as I also imitate (follow) Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1)." God 'has not created anyone who will be independent of Him. Hence, it is therefore necessary to wait on their master to receive instruction on how to do the ministry work acceptably, effectively and efficiently. This is where the ministry begins. Heavenly pattern is the secret for any successful ministry. And that's why Jesus said in the gospel according John chapter 6 verse 40, "A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher."

In addition, personal communication and intimate relationship with Jesus is a necessary requisite for an enduring ministry. Your life comes first before any service. There is a great life that comes through the understanding of the scriptures (John 1:4 & 5:40). Oftentimes, it is only those who come to God and loves Him that partakes of it. It is in the place of communion that God gives direction, guidance and specific instructions on how, what where and when the work is to be done. Remember, it is in the place of deep devotion and communion with the trinity that you are built and get substance. The scriptures says, "For there is a spirit in man but the inspiration of the almighty gives him understanding." If you don't have substance, you don't have status. Your true status is valued by the spiritual substance you possess. And it is only those who don't have substance that will be fighting for the pulpit or position. Quite unfortunately, many are venturing into God's work without any personal relationship with the God of the work. It will be absolutely unnecessary and of no use to be involved in any ministerial work without relationship with God because such service will be irrelevant and unacceptable. It really sounds absurd and it's even unthinkable that someone can exerts his energy and work for an individual or an organization without prior interview, induction training, orientation and so on. Or is it possible to be a staff of an organization without ever meeting or contacting the human resources of the same institution, cooperation or organization? That's exactly what happens when some who claim to have ministry and working for God rarely or don't know God at all. When the work of God takes over our relationship with God there is danger, for our true spiritual strength comes from Him.

Aside from the above mentioned requisites for ministry, availability of the vessel to used is highly essential. The book of 1 Chronicles chapter 29 verse 5 gives an account of the preparation for the building of the temple. Alongside the material resources required for the building were human resources. For any tangible work to be done, both the material and the human resources needed must be readily available. Because God always takes special interest in the life of anyone He intends to use. And He is so concerned about every detail about him even to his garment. Why is God so particular about garment for ministry?  It is because you are easily identified by what you put on. Moses had to ensure that it was done exactly according to specification (Exodus 39:1, 22-31, 41-43). The garment for ministry must be holy (Exodus 28:2, 40:13). There is need for proper clothing before anointing as we see that the instruction given in Exodus 40 verse 13 precede the one in verse 15. Then the  glory of God descended after everything was done accordingly (the priests were properly dressed and were anointed). According to Exodus 40:34-35, "Then the clouds covered the terbanacle of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the terbanacle. And Moses was not able to enter the terbanacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and the glory of the Lord filled the terbanacle." Even Moses couldn't enter because the glory of God has filled the terbanacle. All remains artificial until when the glory of God descends! Jesus depicted holiness throughout His three year period of ministry. He was never contaminated by sin (His spiritual garment was always clean). Therefore, everything and anything that defiles must be removed (1 Corinthians 3:17, Proverbs 22: 11). Our only hope of glory is the indwelling Christ (Colossians 1:27) who will purge us from all uncleanness and baptize us with His power. Similar event occurred in 1 King chapter 8 verse 6 and verses10-11 when Solomon assembled the people and ordered that the ark be brought to its place, the priests cannot ministered because of the glory of God that came down. To experience this constantly, we must heed that express command in Ecclesiastes chapter 9 verse 8,"Let your garment be white, And your head lack no oil (anointing)."

Jesus had a unique ministry because He carried an anointing without measure ( John 3:35, Mark 7:37). Remember the incidence in John chapter 18 verses 6 and 8, "Now when he said to them, I am He" they drew back and fell to the ground. Jesus answered, "I have told you that I am He, Therefore if you seek Me, let these go their way."  Isaiah 41:4, 43:13 and 48:12 are repeated instances of the statement I am He and it depicted the omnipotence of God. The power demonstrated by Jesus was real, genuine and it wasn't a mere shadow of making noise. Jesus method of operation in ministry was through the demonstration of kingdom power and display of divine authority (Luke 6:17-19). His ministry was characterized by signs and wonders. But these days, many lack unction, utterance and anointing to minister, yet, they patch it up with grammar and psychology. The spiritual blindness of  some ministers is evident (Isaiah 29:10). Some demonstrate fake spiritual gifts without life of holiness and this can be very deceptive. Lives of people are in danger when miracles, signs and wonders emanate from ministries that have no relationship with Jesus. However, God longs to share His power with us but not His glory. But there must be purification and thorough cleansing before service. Besides, Jesus method of operation was through prayer. He chose His disciples after He had prayed and He would do nothing without prayer (Luke 6:12-16). The disciples followed the example of their master and they committed themselves to prayer and teaching of the word (Acts 6:3-4). When it became necessary to choose more people to assist them in the work, even administrative positions in the early church was occupied by people filled with the Holy Spirit. They did not fight for pulpit and there was no rancor or contention amongst them. Similarly, structural organization in the church must be by prayer and the leading of the Holy Spirit, there should be no striving for recognition or for  position.

It is sad to note that Christianity these days has been reduced by the devil to money and anything money can offer. It is no more about passionate desire for souls of men and this underscores the need for extra watchfulness. Demons are on the prowl to wreak havoc in the nations and to do terrible things of great magnitude in the churches. There's terrible perversion going on even in the church of God and if care is not taken terrible judgment of God may ensue. In 2 Corinthians chapter 6 verses 3-10, Paul the Apostle showed us a godly pattern of an acceptable service. And in 1 Corinthians chapter 9 verses 16-18, he recounted how he ministered without charging anything and that everything is supposed to be free. Paul's understanding of Philippians chapter 4 verse 13 is quite different from ours, oftentimes we quote this scripture out of context. Paul was saying that weather any storm and bear anything. That verse talks of divine strength and ability to persist and endure. In verse 12 he said that he has learnt everywhere and in everything to be full and hungry. And just like his master to abound and to be abased. Remember that Jesus also said freely have ye received freely give. Elisha told Gehazi his servant in 2 Kings chapter 5 verse 26, is it time to receive gifts while multitude are heading blindly into hell. Unfortunately, modernity has now taken over the church of God and everything is about materialism (Jeremiah 6:16, Galatians 5:7-9). The motive of many for ministry is impure. Some are out merchandising the gift of God and like Balaam expecting gains of divination (Numbers 23:17) because those patronizing them are ready with diviner's fees in their hands (Numbers 22:7). In their way of thinking and operating a ministry, nothing is free. Others are those who are desperate for God 's power without sincere intention like Simon the sorcerer who said "Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.

In this generation, the devil has raised many false prophets and ministers (2 Corinthians 11:13-15). The trickery of men, cunning craftiness and deceitful plotting that ensnares are everywhere these days (Ephesians 4:14). The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ has been bastardized by these crooks, bunch of liars, who are fond of saying the Lord says when the Lord is actually saying nothing. We have a lot on our hands because the rate at which these fake ministers and ministries are now multiplying is alarming. Henceforth, everyone needs to take heed on how he builds on the foundation laid by Jesus because everyone's work will be tested by fire.(1 Corinthians 3:12-15). Remember, the number assignment of believer is to fight a good fight to make heaven and every other thing comes after, ministry or no ministry. Other evil acts so rampart now in these strange ministries are sexual immorality of all kind and sorcery. This two are intricately linked together because anywhere there's witchcraft or sorcery there will be every form of immorality (sodomy, lesbianism, polygamy, adultery, lust, fantasy, masturbation and the likes (Exodus 34:13-16). There is strong correlation between idolatry (witchcraft, sorcery, occultism etc.) and whoredom (immorality). Whenever God speaks of harlotry, it's always perceived as both spiritual and physical (Jeremiah 23:10-11). To worsen it all is the sin of pride. There's need to take caution against boasting and pride because it destroys work and walk with God. John the Baptist told those who came to him in John 3:27 that "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from above." So, if all spiritual giftings we claim to have is given from heaven, why boasting. Paul the Apostles knew the gravity of his ministerial calling and the danger of pride, he said that he disciplined his body and bring it to subjection lest when he has preached to others, he should become disqualified (1 Corinthians 9:27). Human strength (ability) will fail and that's why nothing tangible can be achieved by human effort (Psalm 147:10). In 2 Samuel 6:1-17, Uzza's sudden death was as a result of his unguided zeal and presumption (human tendencies). He hastily performed the duty of the priests as he tried to keep the ark from falling when the oxen stumbled.
